In love magic, red candles are used for passion, attraction and drawing someone back; pink for tenderness, romance and gentle healing; white for clearing, peace and new beginnings; and black for protection and removing interference, never for harm. Other colors add specific qualities: blue for loyalty and calm, orange for opening doors, purple for spiritual strength, green for stability and prosperity. Why color matters at all
A candle in love work is a prayer made visible. Color is part of how that prayer is spoken. It focuses the intention: when you light a pink candle, you are not praying for everything at once; you are praying for tenderness. Color also connects the work to long traditions in which specific colors carry specific meanings, from Catholic devotion to Hoodoo to West African practice.
Color is not magic on its own. A red candle lit carelessly means little. A white candle lit with focused, honest prayer can mean a great deal. But the right color helps the work say exactly what it needs to say.
Red: passion and return
Red is the color most associated with love magic. It stands for passion, desire, vitality, warmth and the pull between two people. In love work it is used for:

- Strong attraction work.
Red is powerful, and for that reason it is not always the first choice. In a relationship full of anger, red can feed the heat rather than soften it. That is where pink often comes first.
Pink: tenderness and healing
Pink is love without the fire: affection, romance, friendship turning into love, forgiveness and emotional healing. It suits:
- Relationships that are cold or tense and need softening.
- Healing after hurt, including healing a broken relationship.
- Gentle attraction, especially early in a connection.
- Self-love work.
Pink is also the color most often used in honey jars and other sweetening work.
White: clearing and peace
White is the most versatile color. It stands for purity of intention, peace, clarity and new beginnings. In love work it is used to:
- Clear heaviness before other work begins.
- Calm a household after a hard stretch.
- Bless a new relationship.
- Stand in for any color when the right one is not available.
If you only ever use one candle color, white is the safe choice. Many traditions treat it as suitable for any honest prayer.
Black: protection and removal
Black is the most misunderstood color. It is not evil. In love work, it is used to absorb and remove negative influences: interference from a third person, the leftover weight of someone else’s spiritual work, or bad luck that seems to follow a relationship. It is often paired with white, black to remove and white to bless.

Blue: loyalty and calm
Blue stands for peace, faithfulness, honest communication and emotional calm. It suits relationships where trust has been shaken, arguments keep flaring, or one partner feels anxious and insecure. Some practitioners use blue in reconciliation after infidelity, alongside pink.
Purple: spiritual strength
Purple is associated with spiritual power, influence and mastery over difficult situations. It is often used alongside red in hard cases, or to strengthen other work. It is less a love color on its own than a booster for love work that needs extra weight.
Orange: opening doors
Orange is used for opportunity, encouragement and opening paths that seem closed. In love, it suits attraction work, meeting someone new, or getting stalled communication moving again.
Green: stability and prosperity
Green is best known for money and luck, but it has a place in love work too. Money stress breaks up many relationships. Green is used when a couple’s love is strong but their finances are pulling them apart, or to bless a home a couple is building together.
Gold and yellow: joy and warmth
Gold and yellow stand for joy, confidence, warmth and attraction. In Yoruba-derived traditions, yellow and gold are associated with Oshun, the orisha of love and sweetness. In general love work, they are used to brighten a relationship that has become dull or heavy.
White clears the ground, pink softens the heart, red brings the fire. The order matters as much as the colors.

Colors across traditions
Color meanings are broadly shared, but each tradition has its own emphasis:
- Hoodoo uses color in candles, cloth and powders, with red and pink central to love and the practice of dressing candles toward you to draw and away to repel.
- Catholic devotion, which shaped much diaspora practice, links colors to saints and seasons; seven-day glass candles often carry saints’ images in specific colors.

What science says about color and attraction
There is some research on color and romance. A well-known 2008 study by Andrew Elliot and Daniela Niesta, published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, found that men in their experiments rated women as more attractive when they were shown with red rather than other colors (Elliot & Niesta, 2008). Later studies trying to repeat the finding have had mixed results, so it should be taken as interesting rather than settled.
What it does show is that red’s link with passion is not only a spiritual idea. It runs deep in how many people experience color. But science does not measure spiritual work, and this post does not claim that it does.
Glass, wax and figure candles
Color can come from the wax itself, from colored glass around white wax, or from painted figure candles. Most practitioners prefer the wax to carry the color, because the color burns with the prayer. Seven-day glass candles often have white wax inside colored glass, which many people use successfully. Figure candles, shaped like people, couples or hearts, come in red, pink, white and black for love and removal work.
What if you only have white?
Use it. White is accepted in almost every tradition as a stand-in for any color. What matters most is the intention and care behind the candle, not whether you found the perfect shade. Many rootworkers kept only white candles on hand for exactly this reason.
Candle shapes and what they add
Color is one part of a candle’s meaning; shape is another. Common shapes in love work include:
- Figure candles in the shape of a man, a woman or a couple, used to focus prayer on specific people. Two figures may be moved closer together over several days in reconciliation work.
- Heart candles for romance and emotional healing.
- Seven-knob candles, a Hoodoo favorite, with seven sections burned one per day for a wish held over a week.
- Seven-day glass candles that burn continuously, suited to longer work.
- Tapers and chime candles for shorter, repeated prayers.
Shape and color work together. A red figure candle says something different from a red taper, and both say something different from a pink heart.
Where to buy candles, and what to avoid
Ordinary candles from a grocery store, pharmacy or botánica work perfectly well. Plain, unscented candles are best, because strong artificial fragrances add nothing to the prayer. Be wary of sellers who insist that only their “specially charged” candles will work, especially at high prices. The candle carries the prayer you put into it, not a price tag.
Colors and the moon
Color choice often follows the moon’s phase. Red, pink and orange suit the growing moon, when love work draws things in. White, black and blue suit the shrinking moon, when work clears and removes. How many candles, and for how long?
There is no single right number. Simple prayers use one candle. Many love rituals use two or three in sequence: white, then pink, then red, for example. Longer work may keep a seven-day candle burning, or light a small candle each night for a set number of nights. More is not better. A few candles, well chosen and carefully tended, carry the intention more clearly than a crowded table.
Colors for same-sex couples
Candle colors mean the same thing for every couple. Red is passion, pink is tenderness, white is clearing, whoever is in love. Colors you might use during aftercare
If you like to light a candle at home while love work settles, choose simply. A white candle for calm and a clear mind. A pink candle on days when you want to feel loved and hopeful. Light it for a few quiet minutes, say what you hope for in your own words, and put it out safely before you leave the room or go to sleep. That is enough.
Reading the burn honestly
People often read meaning into how a colored candle burns: a clean, tall flame as a good sign, a sputtering one as resistance, soot or a cracked glass as trouble. Some of this has long roots in tradition. But flames respond to drafts, wick length and wax quality, and an honest practitioner keeps that in mind. Baba Ali reads a candle as part of the whole ritual, never in isolation, and never uses a sooty glass as a reason to ask for more money.
When you are not sure which color to choose
If you are torn between colors, ask what the situation needs most right now, not what you want in the end. If there is anger, you need softening before passion, so pink before red. If there is interference, you need clearing before drawing, so white or black before red. If you feel scattered and anxious, you need calm, so white or blue. Choosing for the present step, rather than the final hope, is how experienced practitioners think about color.
How Baba Ali chooses colors
In Baba Ali Musa’s practice, color is decided during the reading, not from a menu. The same goal, bringing a partner back, might call for white and red in one case, and black, white, pink and red in another, depending on what stands in the way. The colors are prepared alongside the petition, oils and herbs, and burned on nights chosen by the moon. You are told which materials your ritual needs, and what they cost, before anything is bought.
Myths about candle colors
“Black candles are evil.”
No. Black is for protection and removal. What decides whether work is harmful is its purpose, not its color.
“The wrong color will ruin the spell.”
No. An imperfect color choice may make work less focused, but it does not turn good work bad.
“Soot on the glass means a curse.”
Usually it means a long wick, a draft or additives in the wax. Trim the wick and move the candle.
“More candles means stronger work.”
No. A few well-chosen, well-tended candles do more than a table full of flames. And more flames means more fire risk.
Candle safety
Whatever the color, candles are real fire risks. The National Fire Protection Association reports that candles were the heat source for 2% of reported US home fires. Never leave a candle unattended, keep it at least 12 inches from anything that can burn, use a sturdy holder on a heat-safe surface, and put candles out before you sleep. Putting a candle out for safety does not undo the work.
Do you need to burn candles yourself?
No. When you work with Baba Ali, candles are chosen, prepared and burned at the altar. Some clients like to light a white or pink candle at home during aftercare as a quiet moment of focus, and that is entirely optional.
