Where the doll image comes from

The pin-stuck voodoo doll is mostly a twentieth-century invention of books, films and souvenir shops. It is not a prominent practice in Haitian Vodou or Louisiana Voodoo, and its link with “voodoo” grew out of Western popular culture that often cast Black religions as sinister (Voodoo doll). Figures used to focus prayer on a person are old and found in many cultures, from European poppets to Southern Hoodoo dolls, but harm is only one of many purposes, and not the most common.

A note on Central African carvings

Museums hold carved Central African figures studded with nails, sometimes labeled in older collections as “fetishes” or even “voodoo dolls.” These come from Kongo traditions and served serious communal purposes, such as sealing oaths and agreements, healing and protection. Calling them voodoo dolls misreads them badly, and respecting that difference is part of respecting the cultures behind them.
